Gympie Bruce Highway Upgrade

Client: Queensland Department of Main Roads
Contract Value: $23 million
Completion: March 2009
Location: Gympie, QLD

Upgrade Stage 1 - $13 million

VDM Construction was responsible for constructing the first stage of the highway duplication through the heart of Gympie. The project was planned in four distinct sections with each part being constructed in multiple stages to allow traffic to remain constantly mocing. The two major structure built were a bore piled retaining wall and a 3 metre diametre jacking pipe underneath the highway.

The critical aspect of the project was the detailed staging of work. Lane closures were restricted to the hours between 9pm and 6am due to traffic volume of approx. 20,000 vehicles per day.

VDM also upgraded two existing busy intersections controlled by traffic signals and street lighting. As a result of good traffic management and construction programming, the project was completed seven months ahead of schedule.

 Upgrade Stage 2 - $10 million

After the successful completion of Stage 1, Bellero was awarded the contract for Stage 2. This new section included the reconstruction and widening of a 600 metre stretch of highway and the addition of turning lanes, drainage, two signalised intersections, heavy traffic pavement and retaining walls.

The works also included the relocation and removal of four disused water and gas mains, special compaction treatment for an existing 100 year old drainage tunnel, realignment and reconstruction of two arterial side roads and demolition of two old service stations adjacent to the project.
