Nikenbah Wastewater Treatment Plant

Client: Wide Bay Water Corporation
Contract Value: $15.5 million
Completion: June 2009
Location: Hervey Bay, QLD

The desire to live close to the sea by a growing number of Australians is bringing growth headaches to many Queensland communities, but providing VDM Construction with ongoing infrastructure contracts.

VDM provided the civil works infrastructure to feed the Corporation’s new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant, for which VDM also provided the civil works, at Nikenbah on a Hervey Bay greenfield site.

The project presented many challenges, including the importation of approx. 60,000 m3 of fill that was necessary to bring the site up to the required levels. The 4.8ml/d plant consists of a number of concrete structures and buildings that include:

  • Suspended floor inlet works.
  • 22m diameter balance tank.
  • 6m high multi-walled bioreactor and membrane tanks.
  • Sludge digester and Chlorine Contact Tank.
  • Two storey control building.
  • Blower and chemical buildings, and a sludge dewatering building.
  • 5.5m diameter pump station and 7km DN450 rising main.
