Sunshine Motorway Bridges
Client: QLD Department of Main Roads
Contract Value: $16 million
Completion: March 2009
Location: Pacific Paradise, QLD
Swinging 80 tonne pre-stressed concrete T girders, 35 metres, long into place on a busy Queensland highway is all in a day’s work for the VDM Construction team.
As part of a $120 million duplication of the Sunshine Motorway on the Sunshine Coast, VDM Construction was awarded the task of constructing four bridges over motorways including two x 2-span bridges a 3-span 45 degree skew bridge and a 5-span 45 degree skew super T bridge. All bridges foundations were spliced driven piles and lightweight fill was used on the abutments of the 2 x 2-span bridges to minimise settlement.
The $13.5 million job was a joint venture with the Ark Construction Group.
Scope of works included:
- 3,100m3 of cast insitu concrete
- 450 tonnes of reinforcement
- 3,730m of 550 octagonal piles
- 20,000 m3 of lightweight fill (bottom ash)
Two of the bridges were open to traffic early and the others were officially opened by a government minister before Easter of 2009.
